Wednesday Weeks and the Tower of Shadows
Publisher: Lothian Children's Books, Hachette Australia
Wednesday Weeks and the Tower of Shadows is the first entry in a bright new series by Denis Knight and Cristy Burne. Wednesday Weeks is a reluctant apprentice to her sorcerer grandfather, and her untamed gifts of magic usually lead her astray. But when Grandpa is captured by Gorgomoth the Unclean, Wednesday is sent spinning into a quest to save him. A lot can happen in a multi-dimensional universe where odd socks can become mortal foes, but luckily Wednesday is aided by her geekish friend Alfie (a fellow year six outcast), the all-knowing talking skull, Bruce, and her handy knack for science.
Knight and Burne draw from many of the best-loved tropes of fantasy storytelling – such as its fondness for capitalisation and grandiosity (see the ‘Pit of Extreme Discomfort’) – and place them playfully into a contemporary setting. Combined with dollops of tongue-in-cheek humour, this lively approach to the narrative makes for great entertainment for younger readers. The sequel is set to be published in September 2021, with a third book to follow.
