If you would like to write but are unsure how to get started, consider joining a writing group or centre.

Writers centres and many of the other writers’ organisations in Western Australia host regular writing groups and year-round programs that provide great opportunities to develop skills and meet writers with similar interests. Many also offer one-off and/or short-term workshops and courses catering to writers of all ages, levels of experience and interests.

In the metro area there are three writers centres – in Swanbourne, Greenmount and Joondalup – plus a number of other specialist writing groups – such as WA Poets Inc and the Society of Women Writers. There are also several writing groups based in communities throughout regional WA. To find a writers centre or group and explore what they have to offer, visit Our Member Organisations.

Several centres and groups also belong to an umbrella network – Writers United – and offer reciprocal membership benefits. Look for the Writers United logo in our Noticeboard postings to identify participating organisations.

Words Writers' United inside a circle

If you can’t find an existing writing group in your particular neighbourhood then you might want to think about establishing one. Many writing groups are based in public libraries and approaching your local librarian for information and advice is a good place to begin.
