Emily Paull has created an interesting and well-crafted first collection. In these seventeen contemporary short stories, many of them set in Western Australia, we meet a wide range of women, with a wide range of attitudes and experiences. This is a thought-provoking ensemble, asking the reader to consider the intricate web of connections between people, and the psychological, the sad and the funny, the poignant and the challenging. The author has a great eye for detail and an accessible voice, and is definitely an emerging writer to watch. The final story in the collection – The Woman at the Writers Festival – is particularly intriguing.
