The Tiny Museums by Carolyn Abbs

The Tiny Museums

Author: Carolyn Abbs

Publisher: UWA Publishing

Published: October 2017

The first collection of poetry from this very fine WA writer has been worth waiting for. Formally varied, deceptively simple, the poems are evocative, as Carolyn Abbs remembers her childhood in the UK and moments of her life since then. Closely observed and rendered, often concerned with loss and its consequences, those moments depend on the poet’s complex negotiations between her present and her past. They form the ‘tiny museums’ of the title, and demand our close attention, as do the compelling black and white photographs that open each of the five sections of the book. Like the poetry, they form still, quiet spaces through which we as readers come to apprehend all that they suggest. The Tiny Museums is an important addition to the now extensive titles in the equally important UWAP Poetry series.
