One Potoroo: A Story of Survival

Author: Penny Jaye

Illustrator: Alicia Rogerson

Published: August 2021

One Potoroo: A Story of Survival is a beautifully illustrated and poetically written picture book about conserving the Gilbert’s Potoroo: a critically endangered marsupial. Inspired by real events at Two People’s Bay in Western Australia, the story follows the rescue of a young potoroo with burnt toes and a scorched tail who is scooped up by gentle, caring hands after his habitat and food supply is destroyed by a bushfire.

Positive and uplifting, One Potoroo is an inspiring tale highlighting the importance of conservation and how humans can make a difference in keeping this unique Australian species alive. The text is simple and understated, complemented by colourful illustrations of the bush and wildlife. These in turn are enhanced by scientific information and an author’s note in the final few pages for those readers who will invariably want to know more. This book would make a delightful and important addition to any home or school library.
