Not Always Diplomatic: An Australian Woman’s Journey through International Affairs
Publisher: UWA Publishing
The author of this engaging memoir is, indeed, not always diplomatic. On the page she is funny, honest, thoughtful and sometimes mischievous. After over 30 years working in the diplomatic service, Boyd has a life story well worth telling. Alongside her remarkable career, Boyd also shares with us the changing face of the diplomatic service and, in particular, the changing status of women in the service. Boyd worked in Portugal and East Germany and at the United Nations before she became the Australian High Commissioner in a number of key Asia-Pacific countries, including Bangladesh, Vietnam and Fiji. Laced with humorous anecdotes and quirky personalities, this book covers Boyd’s love of art and her engagement with local communities as well as the larger events she witnessed and influenced (not least the 2000 Fijian coup), and her many notable achievements.
