Mel and Shell

Mel and Shell

Author: Julia Lawrinson

Publisher: Fremantle Press

Published: September 2021

Award-winning author Julia Lawrinson’s new book for middle readers is set in the 1970s, and explores a friendship between two girls, Mel and Shell, united by their love of ABBA. The story is written in Shell’s voice as part of a school assignment in which she writes to Mary, who sailed to Australia from England in 1829. The protagonist, Shell, has a quirky likeable voice, and the book touches on racism, loyalty and the joys of horse riding and roller skating. Mel and Shell is a great read for tweens, and appropriate for class discussions.
