Mavey & Beth’s Double Act: Where’s My Whistle? is the first of a delightful new junior fiction chapter book series for early readers written by WA author Kristy Nita Brown and illustrated by WA artist Alison Mutton.

I have a confession: I also had difficulty learning to whistle as a child, so this story of Mavey lamenting her incomprehensible lack of whistle-making skills was instantly relatable!

The book features plenty of humour and emotive illustrations throughout to keep children entertained. What elevated the story to another level of quality, however, was how the author expertly depicts the depth of Mavey’s anguish and maps out a practical journey to address the issue. The book therefore provides a problem-solving blueprint that can be used by all children across many different scenarios.

Bonus engagement is offered through the whistle-related fun facts and musical instrument-craft activity provided on the inside front and back cover.

Fun and practical, featuring caring characters you wish every child had by their side, this was a truly charming read.

Mavey & Beth’s Double Act: Where’s My Whistle? will suit young readers looking to make the jump from picture books to slightly more complex reading material.

Highly recommend this series and I hope there will be many more to come.
