Did you know that a baby oyster is called a spat? A baby spider a spiderling? A baby owl an owlet? A baby porcupine a porcupette? Baby echidnas and platypuses puggles?

I have to admit I didn’t. But I do now, and much more besides, thanks to Perth author, illustrator and primary school teacher Rachael Robertson’s latest picture book for children 2+, Little Llama’s Big Question.

The big question which Llama asks her mother being: ‘Can you tell me the names of other young animals, Llamama?’ And so we’re off, the vibrant and colourful collage illustrations and clear, simple text, just perfect for bedtime reading, talking in over 50 animals from all around the world.

Little Llama’s Big Question is easily as much fun as Robertson’s previous book, My Amazing Animal Alphabet Alliteration Book, and there’s even a tiny bee to spot on each page until we reach the last page where the question ‘A little llama is…’ is answered by ‘…asleep.’
