Jess Gately is an editor and writing mentor specialising in science fiction and fantasy literature. She loves storytelling in all its formats—written, verbal and visual—and loves helping others tell their stories. She sits on the boards for Night Parrot Press and Writing WA, teaches editing and publishing at Curtin University, and works with a variety of publishers, writers centres and arts organisations around Perth and Australia. Jess holds a Masters in Professional Writing and Publishing from Curtin University.
Biography
Jess Gately is a writer and editor with a particular interest in the science fiction and fantasy genres. She has been a judge for the Aurealis Awards since 2019 and her master's thesis explored the process of editing a manuscript that utilises fictional languages. She sits on the committee for Editors WA, a branch of the Institute of Professional Editors, and was formerly President of the branch.
Jess is a casual academic in editing and publishing at Curtin university and has given guest lectures, hosted workshops and appeared on panels to talk on a variety of topics including social media for authors, submitting to publishers, Australian literature, and editing sci-fi and fantasy and book awards. She has worked as the program coordinator for the Perth Festival Writers Weekend, and as the marketing coordinator for the AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things.
