Issue 1: Brave

Bravery comes in many forms. Here courage is not measured by grand gestures, but by the daily act of taking up space in a world that often isn’t built for disabled bodies and minds.

This issue celebrates the quiet heroism involved in advocating for yourself during medical appointments. Writing can be a radical act. We want you to be authentically, and unapologetically, yourself. This issue is vulnerable and courageous. Tell us about a moment you felt brave, or witnessed bravery in others. Tell us about an imagined world where you didn’t have to be so brave all the time. Tell us about the small brave moments in love stories. Write about your fandom, or your pets, or the music you like to listen to. Tell us about your small acts of rebellion, or what action you’ve taken towards climate change. It’s time to take up space. Look at the world around you. What does it mean to be brave?

Your work does not have to be about your disability status. This is a space for you to be yourself. Write what you want to write.

Submissions close October 31st 2025.

Payment:
We believe in paying contributors for their work. While we are currently waiting for funding, we’re able to offer a $25 payment and a 1-year membership to all accepted contributors. Membership is transferable.

We know this isn’t a living wage, but it’s important to us to offer something tangible while we build toward more sustainable, better-funded publishing. We’ll always be transparent about what we can offer — and our goal is to increase payment as soon as possible.

Submission guidelines
We publish a biannual journal featuring experimental work by disabled writers and carers. We welcome submissions from self-identifying disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent, and mad creators.

Who Can Submit

  1. Writers who identify as disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent or as carers (formal or informal)
  2. No need to disclose diagnoses — we trust you to self-identify
  3. You live in Australia

What We’re Looking For

  1. Poetry, prose, hybrid, or visual-textual work
  2. Up to 2 poems up to 200 lines, 2 prose pieces up to 5,000 words, or a hybrid/visual submission.
  3. We don’t care about formatting — experimental work can take any shape. If the work lives best in an unusual format, that’s not a problem — that’s a strength. If you’re unsure, just get in touch and we’ll figure out how to make it work.
  4. Your work does not have to be about your disabillity status

How to Submit

  1. Please submit your work via the form on our website: https://www.twospoonpress.com/submissions
  2. If this form isn’t accessible for you, email us at [email protected] and we’ll arrange an another way for you to submit your work
  3. No bios or cover letters are required unless you want to include one

Access & Flexibility

  1. Alternative submission formats (audio, video, dictated, etc.) are welcome. If you have any questions about accessibility get in touch.
  2. Struggling with our submissions form? We also accept submissions via email at [email protected]. Make sure to include ‘Submission’ in the title.

A note on the process:

We aim to respond within 6 weeks of receiving your work. If there’s a delay, we’ll communicate transparently. We are a small team of disabled writers so sometimes things take time. We’re building something slow, careful, and radically accessible. We can’t wait to read your work.
