Viki Cramer is a writer and ecologist whose work seeks to understand how both the human and more-than-human world can flourish in the landscapes we share. She is the author of The Memory of Trees: The Future of Eucalypts and Our Home Among Them, which was shortlisted for Book of the Year in the WA Premier’s Book Awards 2024.
Biography
Viki Cramer writes narrative non-fiction centred around questions of conservation, the environment, people and place. She is a PhD-trained ecologist who spent the better part of two decades pondering the inner lives of plants, and their relationships with each other and the soil they grow in. Viki has lived and worked in the mulga lands, brigalow belt, eucalypts woodlands and subtropical forests of Queensland, the savannas and monsoon vine forests of the Northern Territory, and the eucalypt forests and woodlands of Western Australia.
Her science and environment writing have been published in Ensia, Scientific American, ECOS (CSIRO) and Bush Tracks (Bush Heritage Australia). In 2021, Viki was awarded a Dahl Fellowship from Eucalypt Australia. The fellowship led to her first book, The Memory of Trees: The Future of Eucalypts and Our Home Among Them, published by Thames & Hudson Australia in 2023. She contributed to the anthology Ourselves: 100 Micro Memoirs, published by Night Parrot Press in 2024.
