Walkley Award winning journalist and prize winning photographer, Richard Goodwin, is the author of biographies, family histories and monographs. A former Fairfax daily newspaper editor, he has extensive magazine credits and a first class honours degree in communications.
Biography
Author Richard Goodwin began as a graduate reporter on The Age newspaper. His years in journalism including winning a Walkley Award, editing a Fairfax daily newspaper and broadcasting on the ABC and Radio Australia.
He obtained a first class honours degree in communications for a researched thesis on prime ministerial media strategies in 2006.
As a freelance writer Goodwin has many press and magazine publishing credits which include The Australian, The Bulletin, Qantas Club, Web World, Good Taste, Women’s Weekly, Australian Cyclist and Made in Australia. He has written on travel photography for The West Australian.
He produced a short history of the Western Australian Camera Club, A Century in Focus, and a booklet, The Fabric of Wildflowers, on the work of the late Perth artist Thelma Knox.
His 2024 biography of distinguished WA international photographer Bill Angove (1924-1980), Sparks of Genius, draws on Goodwin’s background as an award-winning photographer and photographic judge.
His previous book, Stone of Eternity , chronicling the design and construction of the Doubleview parish church, was a commissioned work incorporating story lines around biography, architecture and history.
Goodwin has written family histories and presented talks on that subject and a range of photography topics.
He is president of the Western Australian Camera Club. A past finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize, he has won many photographic awards. These include Grand Champion at the 2022 Perth Royal Show, winner of the 2022 Subiaco Photo Awards, and prize winner at the 2022 WA Photographic Salon, the Golden Lens awards and the Mt Barker Wildflower and Landscape competition.
A Victorian by birth, Goodwin has lived and worked in Perth for the past 36 years.
