Join us for an inspiring morning with award-winning Western Australian poet Shey Marque discussing her acclaimed poetry collection The Hum Hearers.

The Hum Hearers is an award-winning prose poetry collection which explores themes of imagination, memory, trauma and resilience. The book, described as haunting and powerfully evocative, connects the lives of generations of women through cycles of life amid the echoes of their ancestors.

Shey worked for many years in scientific research and is particularly interested in the evidence that trauma and other experience can be passed on across generations and leave traces in the world. Many of the prose poems explore the ‘hum’. In The Hum Hearers, she is fascinated by the evidence that our experiences in the world and our memories leave traces in our genes and so can be passed on to our descendants.

Currently shortlisted in the WA Premier’s Literary Awards 2026, this book was the winner of the 2025 Wesley Michel Wright Prize, and was a finalist in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards 2026 and for the 2023 Dorothy Hewett Award.
