Writing WA invites public libraries, writing centres, community organisations, venues and individuals across the state to celebrate Western Australian writing through the Love to Read Local program. 

Supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, the program connects local writers and literary professionals with readers across metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia by funding events that celebrate our state’s literary voices. 

As Western Australia’s peak body for writing, Writing WA  strengthens the writing sector by connecting creators with the organisations and communities that share their work – bringing authors to libraries, schools, bookshops, festivals, book clubs and readers of all ages. 

Western Australia is home to a nationally recognised and diverse literary scene, spanning children’s books, Young Adult (YA) fiction, poetry, memoir, crime, romance, general fiction, graphic novels and non-fiction. Love to Read Local provides opportunities for communities to discover these stories and the people behind them. 

The program supports author sustainability through Australian Society of Author professional fees and book sales, strengthens partnerships between libraries and schools, and helps build meaningful connections between writers and readers. 

Chair of Writing WA’s Board, Per Henningsgaard, is excited to launch this much-loved program of support in 2026. “Writing WA believes every reader who discovers a local author helps build a stronger literary future,” he said.  

Individuals and organisations are encouraged to become members of Writing WA and support a network advocating for and building Western Australia’s vibrant literary community. 

Applications for Love to Read Local funding are open now for events scheduled between 3 August 2026 and 30 June 2027. Submit your Expression of Interest by emailing [email protected] by COB 4 September 2026.
