The KYD Unpublished Manuscript Award (KYDUMA) seeks to support writers of adult narrative fiction and non-fiction in the development of their unpublished manuscripts.
Submissions must be either a work of adult fiction (including short story collections) or adult narrative non-fiction. Poetry, plays, practical non-fiction or works for young adults and children are ineligible.
All shortlisted entrants receive a week-long KYD/Varuna Copyright Agency Fellowship, at Varuna, the Writers’ House, in the Blue Mountains. The winner, announced after the fellowship, will also receive a $4000 cash prize.
To submit, you will need to have have a current full-year (12 months) Kill Your Darlings membership (from $32.95 per year) at the time of submission.
Entries must comprise the manuscript, a half-page synopsis, and a one-page document detailing how the writer will benefit from winning the Award. Entries that do not include all of these things will be considered ineligible.
Word limits: 40,000–80,000 words. Please note that if your manuscript is incomplete you are welcome to submit the first 40,000–80,000 words and note in your cover letter that the manuscript is incomplete. If your manuscript is over 80,000 words long you are welcome to submit the first 80,000 words and note in your cover letter that the manuscript in its entirety is longer.
