Congratulations to the winners of the WA Australian of the Year Awards, two of whom are also members of our state’s writing community.
The WA Australian of the Year is Professor Helen Milroy, who was Australia’s first Indigenous doctor and is now a highly regarded expert in child and adolescent psychiatry. She is also an artist and author, whose books include Backyard Birds (Fremantle Press), Willy-Willy Wagtail: Tales from the Bush Mob (Magabala Books) and Wombat, Mudlark and Other Stories (Fremantle Press).
Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, Founder of Plastic Free July and author of Plastic Free: The Inspiring Story of a Global Environmental Movement and Why It Matters (NewSouth Books) was named WA Local Hero.
The WA Senior Australian of the Year was Dr Richard Walley OAM (Champion of Aboriginal culture) and WA Young Australian of the Year was Grace Forrest (Founder and Director of Walk Free).
These category winners will now represent WA at the overall 2021 Australian of the Year Awards on the eve of Australia Day 2021.
