Inaugural Literary Lions Medal: Shortlist Announced

Writing WA is thrilled to announce that the three shortlisted nominees for the inaugural Writing WA Literary Lions Medal are:

  • Rachel Bin Salleh – Magabala Books
  • Gary de Piazzi – WA Poets Inc.
  • Lesley Reece – The Literature Centre

Our panel of judges—Renato Sansalone, Shelagh Magadza and Belinda Hermawan—met last month to review the nominations and to select a shortlist from what was a very strong field.

Chair of the panel and Writing WA Treasurer, Renato Sansalone, said that “arriving at the shortlist was an incredibly difficult task as all of the submissions spoke to the exceptional commitment, passion and generous contributions made to our sector by the individual nominees. This shortlist highlights excellence across our diverse sector—in Indigenous writing and publishing, in poetry and children’s and young adult literature.

“Our three shortlisted nominees are all powerhouses in Western Australia’s literary culture and we are pleased to have this opportunity through the Literary Lions Medal to recognise them for the contributions they make to our sector on a continuous basis. We look forward to celebrating each of them and to announcing the Medal recipient on Thursday, 6 February next year.”
