Australian Book Industry Awards 2020

The Australian Book Industry Awards are an annual event to showcase excellence in the publishing of stories in Australia.

The Australian Book Industry Awards are an initiative of the Australian Publishers Association.

Award Categories and Eligibility

  • Publisher of the Year
  • Small Publisher of the Year
  • Retailer of the Year
  • Bookshop of the Year Award
  • Rising Star of the Year

Book Awards: Only books published between 1 January 2019 – 31 December 2019 are eligible for entry in the 2020 Awards. Books can only be entered into one category, with the exception of the Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year. Categories are:

  • Book of the Year
  • General Fiction Book of the Year
  • General Non-fiction Book of the Year
  • Literary Fiction Book of the Year
  • Illustrated Book of the Year
  • Biography of the Year
  • Picture Book of the Year (ages 0-6)
  • Book of the Year for Younger Children (ages 7-12)
  • Book of the Year for Older Children (ages 13+)
  • The Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year
  • Small Publishers’ Adult Book of the Year
  • Small Publishers’ Children’s Book of the Year
  • International Book of the Year
  • Audiobook Award

Book Award Submissions are currently open and close Monday 3 February 2020.

Business Awards open on Thursday 6 February 2020.

Winners for the Australian Book Industry Awards are determined through a process of selection, first by the ABIA Academy of more than 200 industry professionals, and then a shortlist and winners are chosen by the Judging Panels.
