Rebecca J Palmer is the author/illustrator of the picture book, Monkey Mind, a gentle narrative about the worrying thoughts that cause anxiety. Illustrated with drypoint etchings and watercolour, Monkey Mind is a visual exploration of mindfulness and growth mindset for children, their carers and adults. Rebecca is a fierce advocate for the power of visual language in picture books to enable children to decode hidden or implicit messages in their world. Monkey Mind was supported with an arts grant from the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries.

I am a children's picture book author and illustrator, printmaker, teacher and speaker.

I am a teacher in primary and tertiary education. My background includes many years as a graphic designer/illustrator in the advertising industry and then teaching design and humanities units at Universities and Colleges in WA and Queensland.
I also write learning resources professionally for organisations such as Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and more recently for The School Magazine.

As a printmaker, I create hand-tinted etchings.

Recent experience

I am currently employed through the Education Department of Western Australia at Palmyra Primary School as a classroom teacher. I have delivered many sessions at my school as I have been developing this project. Prior to the recent publication of Monkey Mind on November 1, 2020, I have been taking bookings for author talks at schools in 2021 on topics such as writing and creating persuasive, information and texts, picture books - design process and publication, and how to teach visual literacy to children. My special interests include mental health in schools, particularly focused on anxiety and growth mindset, and Monkey Mind is based on this research.

In 2017 and 2018 I tutored adults in a bridging course - OnTrack, at Murdoch University.
