Who’s Afraid of the Quite Nice Wolf?
Illustrator: Laura Wood
Publisher: New Frontier Publishing
Genre: Children's
Wilfred is a wolf who doesn’t fit in with his wolf pack. He makes friends with the sheep, he’s vegetarian, and he’s not the least bit scary. The other wolves decide Wilfred needs to learn how to behave like a proper wolf. They have a plan, and when he’s properly trained they expect him to join them in an attack on the sheep. Humorous text is paired with bright illustrations to turn the familiar Big Bad Wolf stereotype on its head. Wilfred struggles with the wolf pack’s expectations and ultimately comes up with his own plan. His predicament could be used to start a conversation about bullying, peer pressure, emotional resilience, and being true to yourself. Who’s Afraid of the Quite Nice Wolf? is rewarding to read aloud – with liberal use of onomatopoeia, opportunities for listeners’ participation, and visual gags to maximise the humour.
