Wilson will be your\nguide on this short journey through an exciting literary genre.\nIn this workshop we will try to answer the question\,\n‘What is travel writing’? In answering that\nquestion we will move from early accounts of religious pilgrimage to tales of exploration after the\ndiscovery of the New World in the fifteenth century\, to the Grand Tour of European aristocrats\, to\nthe greats of twentieth century travel writing.\nWe will consider the importance of the personal opinions of the travel writer. DESCRIPTION:Relish poems to love for simply pure enjoyment in these short monthly informal meetings online on Zoom. \nSurely the joy\, intimacy\, compassion and daring of poetry is an antidote to the news and state of the world these days? \nEach month I’ll choose a couple of poems that I find exciting\, arresting or just wonderful. In this small group\, we’ll read poems and discuss them together as readers and as writers looking at the content\, form\, poetic techniques\, voice\, syntax and other stylistic aspects. Then we will write short responses to the poems. \nIt’s a simple format with two sessions of close reading and discussing poems and two opportunities for writing. We won’t be spending too much time reading back work we’ve written\, but we will discuss some reflections on our writing and share extracts in the chat if you wish. \nThese short sessions are only 45mins to one hour long\, a shot in the arm for inspiration\, professional development and most importantly a reminder to keep expanding your reading joy\, being inspired by great poems\, new and old… one of the most enriching things to do in life I think! \nIt doesn’t matter whether you get published or win prizes or whatever\, just bring your love of poetry\, words and ideas. It’s really about the simple joy in poetry and creativity. \nTop up your monthly inspiration! \nFacilitator: Perth poet Cath Drake.\nCath’s poetry collection\, The Shaking City (Seren Books\, 2020) was longlisted in international Laurel Prize and highly commended in the UK Forward Prize. It followed Sleeping with Rivers\, a Poetry Book Society Choice & winner of the Seren/Mslexia poetry prize. Cath has been published widely in anthologies and literary journals in UK\, Ireland\, US\, Europe and Australia\, recently including Best of Australian Poems\, Poetry Salzburg Review and The Weekend Australian. She has twice been be awarded second place in the international Ginkgo Ecopoetry Prize and also highly commended in this prize. An environmental science graduate\, Cath worked for a decade as an environmental scientist\, writer and journalist and won awards for her environmental nonfiction writing and broadcasting. Cath is also a mindfulness teacher and she has run The Verandah\, quality online poetry events\, since 2020.

SUMMARY:Writing & Editing Prize-winning Sonnets with Hannah Lowe 19/5/26
DESCRIPTION:This is a unique sonnet workshop with a difference with a top UK poet. Prize-winning poet\, Hannah Lowe will offer an exploration of how she developed some of her own sonnets\, including poems from her collection The Kids (winner of the Costa Book of the Year\, shortlisted for the TS Eliot prize\, UK Poetry Book Society Choice). Hannah will generously explore how she conceived and developed her drafts toward finished pieces. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. \nWe will also consider elements that make a sonnet work\, and explore influences and examples through close reading of some of Hannah’s favourite sonnets. The session includes practical writing exercises\, giving attendees the chance to experiment with sonnet-inspired poems. \n‘Sonnet’ is from the Italian sonetto meaning ‘little song’. It has also been described as a little room\, a contained and concentrated space to focus on a single subject\, thought or idea. The form can really help a poet to focus and condense their writing into a powerful core. It’s one of the oldest and most enduring poetic forms\, typically 14 lines. \nHannah Lowe is a poet\, memoirist and academic. Her last book\, The Kids (2021)\, won the Costa Poetry Award and the Costa Book of the Year\, 2021. Her forthcoming bookis The Woman in the Chinese Collar (2027). Her first poetry collection\, Chick (2013)\, won the Michael Murphy Memorial Award for Best First Collection. In September 2014\, she was named as one of 20 Next Generation poets. Her family memoir Long Time\, No See (2015) featured as Radio 4’s Book of the Week. She is a Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University.
