Rules in the Poetry Game: Masterclass with Kate Potts

25 July @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Explore some of the ways poets use rules of control and restraint in their writing to bypass the blank page, embrace chance, and find surprising or serendipitous outcomes.

We’ll discover how, whether we use such constraints wholeheartedly or intermittently, letting go of conscious choice and embracing randomness and play can bring a new sense of imaginative freedom to our practice.

We’ll look at techniques from the Surrealist and OuLiPo movements and beyond: automatic writing writing that aims to bypass the conscious mind; the ‘eyeball kick’ cut-up, which juxtaposes images in unexpected ways; ‘N+7’, in which every noun in a text is replaced by the noun seven places on in the dictionary; and the lipogram, where certain letters are deliberately omitted from a text. We’ll also explore using non-poetry texts such as adverts, instructions and RSVPS as starting points and scaffolding for new work.

Although traditional forms such as the sonnet also use constraint and rules,  in this workshop we’ll focus on more recently devised rules of procedure and structure. Featuring poetry by Etheridge Knight, Jackson MacLow, Christian Bök and Caroline Bird, this workshop will equip you with new tools for creative inspiration.
