Fiction Editing Masterclass: Historical Fiction with Renée Otmar

2 July @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

$175 – $490

Experience a deep dive into historical fiction with leading editor and trainer Dr Renée Otmar. This masterclass offers sustained engagement with the genre and the opportunity to work closely on a historical fiction manuscript in a collegial and supportive environment.

Your first session will provide an introduction to this fiction genre:

  • How do we define “historical fiction”?
  • What are the current trends in industry and which subgenres are popular?
  • What challenges does historical fiction share with general fiction editing?
  • What are key issues specific to historical fiction?

The following sessions will explore your impressions of the sample manuscript, consider its challenges and readership, and will workshop an assessment before you craft your own response, upon which you will be offered feedback and opportunity to further discuss options for a developmental edit.

This masterclass is limited to 12 participants. It is designed for those with some professional editing experience and familiarity (as reader or editor) with fiction, who are keen to explore fiction editing in more depth, and are drawn to this genre.

Cost:  IPEd Members & Affiliates $280; IPEd Students and concession members $175; Non-members $490. This fee covers all 3 sessions and all sessions must be attended.

Presenter: Dr Renée Otmar has over three decades’ editing experience, is an Honorary Life Member of the Institute of Professional Editors, and received the institute’s most esteemed award, the Janet Mackenzie Medal, in 2022. Her specialisations include historical fiction, and she was a judge of the 2023 ARA Historical Novel Prize, Australia’s richest prize for historical fiction.
