About the Book: This historical novel, of epic proportions, is based on the life story of Captain John Thomas and his wife Elizabeth (nee Cooper). As a youngster, Ken had heard a little about Captain Thomas. His photo had been hanging on his grandmother’s lounge room wall and she often told him stories about their famous ancestor and his exploits. Ken investigated further and thought it was an incredible story that had to be told.

Captain Thomas came to the Swan River Colony, with his family, as a fifteen-year-old boy. His father John Thomas senior, a carpenter, was an indentured servant to Thomas Peel, so he was part of the Peel Scheme, as it was known. The scheme was an abject failure and was dissolved after the first year. Thirty-seven people had died. It did however bring between four and five hundred settlers to the Colony. The boy, also named John, was later known as Captain Thomas.

John Thomas the younger and his siblings suffered personal tragedies and horrifying events after which John, at 19 years of age was left with the responsibility of looking after the three younger children. He rose to task and guided them safely and successfully through the next decade.

Some history books and newspapers tend to avoid the real human story behind the history. Ken resolved to try and include the real emotions, the happiness, the loneliness, the joy, the sorrow, the frustration and sense of injustice that the members of the family suffered. The result is Ravenswood Dreaming.
