Biography Sarah French was born in Perth in 1969. For the first ten years of her life she was a ward of the state. She has been a trainee-opera singer, full-time carer, guest editor, many times writer in residence, ESL teacher, university tutor and speechwriter for the WA Department of Health. Dizzy after much spin-doctoring, she has just completed a Grad Dip in Secondary English Teaching.
Publication History In Australian Book Review Anthony Lawrence commented on her, “remarkable use of unexpected rhythms and fine detail making prediction impossible.” Her writing has been widely published throughout Australia including in Going Down Swinging, Meanjin, Stylus, Westerly, Between the Lines: New WA Writing, Sudden Alchemy: Collection of Tom Collins Poetry Prize Winners, Sibling Stories (FACP) and Cordite. Other poems are due to be published in Best Australian Poetry (UQP Press) and The Journal for Australian Studies (Zeitschrift für Australienstudien/ZfA) which is published in Germany. Her first collection Songs Orphans Sing (FIP New Poets 2007) was commended in the Anne Elder National Poetry Prize. Sarah was awarded a Varuna Poetry Mentorship and an ArtsWA Grant to complete her first collection. In addition, Sarah has guest edited Westerly: Young writers Issue, Five Bells and Indigo.
