| Biography | Annamaria Weldon, shortlisted for the Peter Porter Poetry Prize 2012, was awarded the inaugural Nature Writing Prize (2011) by the Nature Conservancy Australia, and the Tom Collins Poetry Prize 2010. Her text, photo and recorded poetry installation, in collaboration with the visual artist Carolyn Marks, was commissioned for the opening of Mandurah INQB8 Gallery of Contemporary Art in 2011, and she has led a number of public writing/art projects and nature writing workshops, including in regional areas. THE ROOF MILKERS, Annamaria Weldon's collection of poetry, was published by Sunline Press in mid-2008 and ABC Radio's Poetica broadcast the title poem of her collection during National Poetry Week in September. In January 2009 ABC Radio National broadcast her reading of her short story Splendid Blue Wren. As a Resident at UWA's Symbiotica from 2009-12 Annamaria has been writing about Lake Clifton and the Thrombolite reef. Her prose and poetry will form part of the Adaptation project exhibition in Mandurah in May 2012. During this residency, Annamaria collaborated with the zoologist Laurie Smith. Annamaria's prose and poetry are grounded in a sense of place which was encouraged early in life: her childhood was spent travelling through and living in N. Africa, London and Central America. Later she returned to Malta, her island birthplace, to complete her education and work as a journalist, editor and emerging poet. In 1984 she emigrated to Western Australia and wrote for The West Australian and The Australia Council, among others. In the last ten years she has made the transition from journalism back to poetry and fiction and her work has been published in many journals and anthologies, and her readings recorded on CD. Since 2007 Annamaria has been accredited to writingWA's Poets in Libraries in 2007. Cleared to work with children, she has led workshops for students at all three levels of education. An experienced public speaker and passionate narrator, she also welcomes opportunities to speak to book clubs, writer and social groups and frequently participates in poetry recitals and readings around Perth and Fremantle. She weaves autobiography, cultural diversity and wisdom stories into both her readings and workshops. Annamaria has lived near Fremantle for many years, where she has been a member of Out of the Asylum Writers' Group (OOTA) since its foundation. Other memberships include FAWWA where she was a 2007 Masterclass poet, WAPI, MPU, PEN and the Australian Society of Authors. Also Australian Geographic, Birdlife Australia and FRAGYLE. |
