Many Years a Thief
David Hutchison
ISBN: 9.78E+11
It is well-known that over 9000 adult convicts were transported to Western Australia between 1850 and 1868. It is much less well-known that, during the 1840s, 234 boys from the Parkhurst Reformatory on the Isle of Wight were transported to the colony to be apprenticed to settlers. One of the group taking part in the attempted rehabilitation scheme was a fifteen-year-old boy, John Gavin.
John Schoales, the government guardian of the new arrivals, put Gavin to work on an isolated farm south of Perth. Soon after, he was brought back to Fremantle in shackles, charged with the murder of his master’s son.
He was found guilty and hanged, near the Round House (which still stands) in Fremantle on Easter Saturday 1844. Gavin became the first European to be executed in the colony of Western Australia. Many Years a Thief explores the emotional impact on those involved. A novel based on a true story which will appeal to lovers of beautiful fiction, as well as to Australian history buffs.
