The Korea Literature Translation Institute has an all-expenses paid residency program for published foreign writers, aged 25-45, to come to Korea and stay for 6 months, experience Korean culture and share ideas with Korean writers.

General Information

1. Period : late-May, 2008 ~ October 31st, 2008
2. Location : Korea Literature Translation Institute
3.Contents : Literature
4. Qualifications:
(1) Specialist in Literature ages between 25 to 45 from Asia, Latin America, and Africa
(Public servant, researcher, artist, etc.)
(2) Language required for training (English)
(3) Person in related training sector, interest for exchange with Korea

5. Support : The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Korea provides financial support for round-trip airfare, living expenses, training expenses (including Korean language training), cultural experience expenses, etc.

(1) Airfare: Round-trip Air Ticket (economy class) from airport near the participant's place of residence to Incheon International Airport in Korea. If airfare is purchased first by the participant, then round-trip airfare will be reimbursed along with 1st month training expenses (submission of purchase receipt required)

(2) Accommodation for 6 months

(3) Living Expenses
- 900,000 Korean won
(living expenses to cover food, transportation, communication, taxes and
public utilities, etc.)
- Living expense is transacted into the participant's Korean bank account once
a month

(4) Other Benefits
- Professional Training Course in each field
- Korean Language Course (200 hours)
- Medical Insurance
- Cultural Experience in Korea, etc.

(5) Participant Health Examination related issues
- A health examination must be conducted at one's own expense prior to selection and submitted. Measures related to results of examinations will be disclosed by the host institutions prior to selection.

- Doctor's opinion statements must be attached when applying participant has a long-term disorders (High blood pressure, diabetes, depression, etc.)

- If having to return upon the discovery of a disorder through an health examination conducted after entering Korea, please consult with the CPI Secretariat.


Application Procedure

1. CPI Participant selection
__ Participants must submit an application to an institution related to one's activities by referencing their website to become selected as a 2008 participant.

2. Submitting required documentations of host institution (Documents of Qualification, Research Proposal, etc.)

(1) Documents of Qualification
- Documents & recommendations which demonstrate that the qualifications
required by the host institution are satisfied, documents evidencing participant's
soundness of health.

(2) Research Proposal : Proposal on planned research while staying in Korea

(3) Health examination documents : documents evidencing that conducting the program during the training period will not cause health-related issues.
One is required to submit the documents & tasks as required from any additional institutions. If documents are found to have been falsified, cancellation or termination of selection, return of expenses such as airfare,
living expense, etc. may be required.

__.Process upon selection

1. Documents required for issuance of visa
__ The host institution will receive an issue of a long-term visitors visa number (Confirmation of Visa Issuance No) from the Immigration office in Korea and have it sent to the participant by mail. Selected participants are required to submit documents necessary in full for visa issuance to the pertaining host institutions.

2. Booking and purchasing Airfare
__ If airfare is purchased first by the participant (round-trip economy-class airfare tickets, direct flight from airport nearest to the participant's place of residence to Korea) then such fees will be reimbursed along with 1st month training expense (submission of purchase receipt is required)

3. Accommodations
__ Accomodations will be provided in a location which is suitable for the participant to train at the host institution. However, related information, such as location and condition, will be fully provided to participants beforehand.

4. Insurance
__ Insurance coverage of at least 30 million won in the case of injury or disease and at least 20 million won in the case of death will be provided upon entry into Korea. Detailed explanations will be provided upon participant's entry to Korea.
__ Any additionally required insurance coverage can be arranged but at the participant's own expense.

5. Preparations for entry
__ Materials requested by the host institution and personal items must be prepared upon entry into Korea. Please also prepare one's traditional clothing necessary during Secretariat-sponsored events.












__ Process upon entering country

1. Enter Korea through Incheon International Airport
__ Please conduct adequate discussions beforehand with the institution administrator regarding the date of arrival, method, etc.

2. Creating a bank account
__ Upon arriving in Korea, the participant must open a bank account in one's own name. If the participant had personally purchased airfare, then round-trip airfare expenses will be reimbursed into this bank account.
__ Immediately upon entering Korea, please entrust your return trip ticket with the host institution.

3. Obligations to attend events sponsored by the Secretariat
__ The Secretariat will conduct general orientations regarding the CPI project and living in Korea. The biannual culture trips, international symposium, farewell party, and other events sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism an the CPI Secretariat are required for attendance.

4. Drafting contract agreement
__ A contract agreement regarding management?obligations of the participant and host institution must be drafted with each party possessing one copy.

5. Member registration to website (culturefriends.or.kr)
__ Upon entering the country, participants must register as a website member and begin activity. Various other activities, such as drafting webzine manuscripts, etc. will also be conducted.

6. Issuance of Alien Registration Card
__ Alien registration must be completed within 90 days of entering the Republic of Korea and the issued alien registration card must be carried on person at all times.












__ Basic regulations for Training

1. Entering and leaving the country during training period is generally not allowed, but in the case of an emergency, please discuss with the institution without delay.

2. Training will occur through common programs and programs by institution, both of which obligate the participant to attend. If unable to attend a program, related procedures must be conducted beforehand, such as discussions, etc.

3. All basic training guidelines must always be followed. Violations may result in disciplinary actions (immediate return, reductions in expenses, etc.)

(1) Common Program : Korean language training (200 hours), Orientation, Culture trips (2 rounds), Farewell Party

(2) Common required presentation : Discuss and present on one's own culture (tourism, arts, physical education, media, etc.)

(3) Institutional Programs : Professional training for each sector conducted 5 times a week (Monday ~ Friday) for a total of 40 hours.

4. A midterm progress report and final report must be submitted for the common programs, such as culture trips and for the institutional programs. Methods of submission will be explained by each institution in advance.

__Training Activities

1. It is the responsibility of the participant for accidents which occur outside of official training times.

2. Activities conducted during the training period must be in accordance to the original intent. Participants may be asked to leave or receive disciplinary sanctions when participating in profit-gaining activities or other activities not related to one's intended purpose of visiting Korea.

3. Participants may not receive support expenses in addition to the expenses as provided by the training institution.

4. Participants generally may not be accompanied by family or friends.




__ Leaving the country
1. Confirmation of training certificate as issued by each institution can be received upon completion of 80% of the duration of the training program and submission of required results.
2. Cooperation must continue with the training institution after leaving the country.
3. Leaving the host country must generally occur following the completion of the training period.
