Affirm Press are looking for writers who fit the 'young' writers demographic (roughly under 35) for contributions for a new book, Lines of Wisdom, that will focus on the inspirational stories of 10 ordinary and elderly Australians. They're looking for a mix of subjects from around Australia over 75 (or slightly younger in exceptional circumstances), who are willing to open their lives to you and are prepared to be photographed. They can be people you know or strangers you find. Stories can be between 2,500 and 5,000 words, for which they'll pay 35c/word. The book will be published by Affirm Press in October 2008.
Affirm Press was started by Martin Hughes, former editor of The Big Issue magazine, and businessman and philanthropist, Graeme Wise, who set up The Big Issue in Australia in 1996. The company has six books slated for publication in 2008, and Martin will be editing Lines of Wisdom personally.
If you're interested in contributing to Lines of Wisdom, please email martin@affirmpress.com.au with subject 'Lines of Wisdom pitch' by 19 March.
Please include a couple of paragraphs on the person you plan to profile, outlining why you think he or she will make a good subject; your relationship; and what sort of access you would have to them, their family and friends. Also include a sample of your work that best represents your preferred style and acceptance of the word rate and deadline.
